Set beside the lovely river Cam in rural Cambridgeshire, the lovely city of Cambridge is rich in architecture and history. It is a delightful town to wander around with its bookshops and tea rooms on every corner. It is well worthwhile taking a walking tour with a professional guide to learn more of this extraordinary college town.

 

The jewel in the crown of Cambridge is King’s College Chapel which took nearly 70 years to build.

Attend evening Mass in the Chapel and listen to the choir whilst admiring the beautiful work of Rubens, the Adoration of the Magi. The wonderful stained glass windows are from the 16^th century. The Senate House next door is worth admiring for its James Gibb architecture but this university parliament building is not open to visitors. Tucked away behind these grand buildings you can see the tiny Anglo-Saxon church of St Benedict, older even than Corpus Christi College by at least 350 years. Climb the tower of Great St Mary’s church and get great views over this flat fenland town. Still on a church theme, look out for the Norman round Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

 

Trinity College has the largest quadrangle in the world and over the gateway, a statue of Henry VIII presides. You will notice he is holding a chair leg rather than a scepter, perhaps a ragweek prank! Above the statue is the college’s first astronomical observatory. Behind Trinity college runs the River Cam with a replica of Venice’s Bridge of Sighs. Those who enjoy reading should visit the University Library. It is an immense collection as by law it receives a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom!
