Oxford Castle Unlocked

For those who think history is dry as ditchwater, think again. Oxford Castle Unlocked reveals Oxford’s less well known history with tales of great escapes, romance and betrayal. This historic site was used to incarcerate prisoners from 1071 until it finally closed down as a HM Prison in 1996. The buildings are in their own timewarp and as visitors explore with their costumed character guide, the site’s colourful past is revealed.

Descend into the dark atmosphere of the 900-year old crypt with its Romanesque columns. Marvel at the old mound of the Motte and Bailey castle with its 13th century vaulted well chamber. Climb the 101 steps to the top of St George’s Tower and enjoy stunning views right across Oxford from this strategic position of defense. Learn about Empress Matilda’s escape across the frozen Thames. The more recent past includes tales of the 18th century debtor’s prison and the prison D-wing. Learn about prison life and decide for yourself whether Mary Blandy was murderer or scapegoat. Listen to stories from former prisoners and prison officers describing 20th century prison life. The attraction was highly recommended in Tourism’s Awards 2007 and is an interesting and informative look at one aspect of Oxford life.

Location: 44-46 Oxford Castle, on the west side of the city, off New Road.
